Illustration Friday: Open

Who was she? And what drew her through the open door?

Well it's been a crazy weekend around here. So this is the first time I've posted something that wasn't done specifically for the topic, but just happened to fit. This is an Illustration Friday special topic where people will vote and the winners will have the option of displaying in a certain gallery. The whole concept was very stressful for me and I found myself resistant to creating something specifically to be judged. Worry about whether or not it would be good enough just sapped the fun right out of it. But I found I couldn't just ignore the fact that there is extra pressure on this topic and just do something fun anyway. It just brings up all the tension of the juried art show process (and the repeated submission and rejection of the publishing process) that I've gone through. I've never been very good at compartmentalising that aspect as the business portion of creating and therefore lack a protective detachment.

Heather, this has to be one of my favorites since it is so appropriate. I think the woman is you and the open door a portal to a fresh new path in your career. I absolutely LOVE it!

Hi Heather, thank you so much for your comments about my work, I really appreciate it.
Open doors was another idea I had too, I think your work does it great justice you have captured all the mystery and magic of what a door can hold, very much like a book really. I suppose anything that opens has a slight mystery behind it, as you never know quite what you'll find.
Beautful colour and the mood you created is amazing, well done.

This is a very captivating painting! I love the feeling of a story; it allows the viewer to travel into the visual image and create other images of her own. The detail on the door is especially lovely. As far as the judging thing goes, it's always so arbitrary and subject to taste, so you just have to develop that thick skin. Every artist who enters juried shows gets rejected, even those who end up winning best in show at other times!
